|Switzerland Wine, Food, and Culture Tour
October 13– 23, 2010
Day 1 - Arrival Zürich – Independent morning arrival and transfer to the hotel. See
Zurich’s historic guildhouses, medieval churches, and Chagall windows at Fraumunster
church. Taste local wine in Stafa.
Days 2, 3, & 4 - Zürich – Lugano - Lago Maggiore - Borromean Islands and
Gardens - Morning stop at a Stein dairy to see how Swiss cheese is made, then onto
tiny Liechtenstein, via the picturesque hamlet of Werdenberg. Arrive Lugano for the
next 3 nights. Taste red wines at the Vinattieri Ticinesti Winery. Enjoy a city tour of
Lugano’s monument of Independence, Old Town and Saint Mary's Church. Dinner with
wine in a rustic Grotto restaurant. Visit Locarno, a beautiful town in the hollow of a
sunny bay, and stop at Ascona, a former, fishing village and a favorite of artists. Boat
trip to the Borromean Islands’ 17th Century palace and terraced gardens.
Days 5 & 6 - Lugano – Sion - The Valais - Travel via the Gotthard Pass to
Andermatt, then by train to Brig along the route of the famous Glacier Express. Drive
to Sion, whose Old Town, with castles and museums that hug the hills, is surrounded by
vineyards in one of the main wine areas of Switzerland specializing in white wines such
as Fendant. Visit winery Gilliard, and enjoy dinner at the winery Château Villa Sierre.
Morning visit to Visperterminen, Europe's highest vineyard, for a wine tasting at J.
Chardon, and afternoon visit to the car-free mountain village of Zermatt. Dinner at the
Days 7 & 8 – Lausanne & Vineyards of the Lake Geneva region - Visit Vétroz Bon
Père Germanier founded in 1896, and home to Bon Père William, for a tour and
tasting. Continue to hilltop Gruyeres, and visit the model cheese dairy. Continue to
your hotel in Lausanne. Morning visit to impressive "Chillon Castle", whose famous
prisoner, Bonivard, was immortalized by Lord Byron. Visit Château d'Aigle, an
imposing fortress built in the 13th century, and Musée Vaudois de la Vigne et du Vin,
dedicated to the cultural traditions of wine. Enjoy lunch with wine. This afternoon
experience a cooking class and dinner with a local chef.
Day 9 - Lausanne – Lucerne - Depart for Berne, the capital of Switzerland. City
sightseeing tour of the gothic cathedral, the fountains decorated with flowers and
statues, the Clock Tower, the House of Parliament and Berne's famous Bear Pit. Then
drive to Lucerne via the Emmental Valley. Tour of Lucerne, including the Old Town
with quaint streets and squares, busy market places and decorated houses, the
wooden Chapel Bridge with its unique historical paintings and Old Town Hall, the Jesuit
church and the Lion Monument. Farewell dinner.
Day 10 - LUCERNE – independent departures to the Zurich airport.
